Not so great Britons

Britons are more likely to be arrested in the UAE than anywhere else in the world, new figures have shown.

The 2009 British Foreign Office ‘British Behaviour Abroad Report’ shows that 294 people from the UK were arrested here in the 12 months up to March 31, with 48 of those drug arrests.

In a year that saw drunken Brits having sex on a beach and threatening to blow up a plane, the report makes stark reading for expats hoping to make a good impression.

“As a proportion of the number of visitors, Britons were most likely to be arrested in the United Arab Emirates,” the report says bluntly.

Marco Blankenburgh, who runs cultural sensitivity courses in the UAE, said British expats are often caught out by the belief that anything goes in the moderate nation.

“You have to remember that you are in a Muslim country. People forget that,” he said.

“They forget they are in the Middle East because, Dubai especially, is largely open and tolerant.”

An advisory note with the report explains that Britons must be aware of local traditions.

“Topless sunbathing, swearing and public displays of affection can also lead to arrest in some countries. This highlights the need for Britons to ensure they carefully research the area to which they are travelling,” it said.

British couple Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer mortified fellow British expats last year when they were caught in a compromising position on Jumeriah Beach after a drunken brunch.

The case made headlines around the world, while compatriot Mark Winterbottom was arrested at Dubai airport in July 2008 for a drunken tirade in which he threatened to blow up a plane.

The report also notes that there is one Briton in the UAE who is facing a possible death penalty - one of 12 internationally. That person is believed to be Mark Arnold, although this has not been confirmed. Arnold is facing murder charges for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, Kerry Winter.

Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant said: “So many of the problems we deal with can be avoided with a little bit of preparation. Researching the local laws and customs before you travel could avoid time in a foreign jail.” And an official with Dubai Public Prosecution said simply: “There are no differences between all the nationalities... Any person breaking the law must be punished.”

Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors:
The infamous pair were arrested in July 2008 after a policeman caught them having sex on Jumeirah Beach.
They were both sentenced to three months in prison, later suspended on appeal.

Mark Arnold: Currently on trial for allegedly murdering his ex-girlfriend in 2008. He’s already been convicted in a separate case of assault.

MR X-Posed:
A boozed-up British man exposed himself to a Lebanese woman at JBR. He said he was too drunk to remember what happened.

COMMENTS

Ancient X – This is not about badly behaved Brits it is about your obvious and deep hatred for British people as a whole, you waste no opportunity to continually have a go at us and I for one will not stop countering your comments for as long as 7 days allows me to. For the most part I will not stoop to calling people ‘spastic’, my brother is severely disabled and I find your ill advised comments to be highly offensive as I do you as a whole. You have no idea of who I am so how are you frustrated at not being able to show people what ‘I really am’. Ref downgrading local people, please show me where I have done this and equally where I have been chauvinistic. The term ‘spastic’ as an insult is normally reserved for the mouths of those of a young age who are unable to comprehend its true meaning which rather contradicts your lofty tag of Ancient X.

Posted by: anonymous [01.Sep.09 1 : 08 PM]

Ah yes resorting to name calling now Ancient? how mature. NOT!! it just goes to show how uneducated you are. Fanny

Posted by: anonymous [01.Sep.09 12 : 46 PM]

Ancient X – Please show me where I have downgraded locals here, please show me where I have been chauvinistic, am I talking to a woman now??? You wish to highlight what I really am do you! Well go ahead as you have aptly shown who you are, a spiteful potty mouthed liar who will stop at nothing other than to twist the truth and to avoid the questions I have put to you! Show me where I have said these things!...As for calling people a spastic, I now know who I am talking to! A 12 year old, grow up!Childish! you are the very definition of the word

Posted by: anonymous [01.Sep.09 12 : 37 PM]

Monkey: So I am to be accused now for starting all of this? What are you in denial or are you that limited? Refresh your mind and you will find out that it was you and your friends that lit up the fire from your dim-witted, chauvinistic comments about the UAE and its locals along with downgrading all other expatriates (excluding brits). And yes, I stand firm and I wish I could highlight what you really are on 7days but regretfully I can’t do. You respect yourself and others as a start then trust me you will earn the same in return. Palooza is a spastic and definitely gives a bad name for retards, the above said goes for him as well. Anyways enough has been said as this is becoming too childish. Stick to the topic of the page.

Sigh...Bad Apples it is. I moved here with my husband and kids from the UK many years ago. Let's face it we did it for a better quality of life and yes the UK is not as safe as Dubai and the "Chavs" have taken over. But what suprises me is that now they have found their way across and are now an eyesore for many a law-abiding Brit. I am not making any excuses but there is no way to stop them. We stopped our family friday brunches for commonly known reasons that even makes us hang our head in shame at our countrymen and women. Any action is only right in that it weeds out those that have no respect for the law. I personally have come across many who have a total disregard in the way they dress, talk and even their attitude is one of "I'd give a flying ...." We don't need to be hypocritical (as some in this thread clearly are) and without pointing fingers at any other nationality, need to take heed and warn our near and dear of the concequences of coming to the UAE and openly flaunting an English mentality, as the results of not abiding by the law are out for all to see by our OWN British Foreign Office. Perhaps as a warning of testing the ties of the local friendly hospitality...

As I have said all along I have merely defended against blatant racism towards my fellow Brits, this has come from the very nationalities that you have mentioned, have you seen some of the posts here?! I only have a dig in reply to their own nasty little jibes , it seems to me your memory is rather selective and as for Mr X his postings are so vile it is beyond the pale. Ref my opening statement read it again and understand it before you have a go! I am sure everyone is a racist at times and many here I can assure you cannot wait to have a go at Brits. So just as they always appear to have a go, so will I to defend my countrymen from generalisation....As for fans this isn’t the X Factor I don’t care if people like or love it’s my opinion, I know the report is from our people I just cannot abide the dim wits here who think WE ARE ALL LIKE THAT!

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 8 : 20 PM]

Monkey Allen, ur very first comment is abt Indian Drivers, Suadi's , Nigerians, Southafricans, Filipinos...mate u've taken a dig @ everyone and i am surprised u have fans in Palooza n marymagreth. This is report by Your foriegn office n they r trying to address the problem. theres alwayz bad n good...condemn the bad n honour the good. n btw der's not a single soul in dis world hu's not been / thought /acted as a racist @ some point of time.

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 3 : 38 PM]

My opening comment ref Indian drivers was only to emphasise racial stereotyping and not to single out Indians, please read again and you will see Mr R2D2, IF this was what you had been referring to.

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 3 : 16 PM]

Yes i agree, the only reason i responded to this moron's comments a while back was for labelling all western expats as scum. This racist doesnt deserve your pity monkey.

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 3 : 10 PM]

Talking of nationalities then Mr X what exactly are you seeing as we are being specific!

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 2 : 47 PM]

WANTED: EXPERT IN INFERIORITY COMPLEXES AND SHOULDER CHIPS; PLEASE APPLY WITHIN ...X MARKS THE SPOT! Oh dear I think you need to join your Alzheimer’s work shop again Mr X as you seem to forget it was your stubby digits that started all of this off right from the word go by calling people scum!

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 2 : 46 PM]

right, i've got no love for anything british and at the same time i've got no hate. the reason i place a comment is, someone took a dig at Indian people to which i do not respond too kindly! yes, we may be at the lead of a lot of bad things but we are also at the lead of lot more better things! so, when the argument involves british people, its best to keep it limited and focused to that! let us not even try and include a nation that has over a billion patriots into such futile comparisons! :)

Monkey said: “Ancient X, most people on here disagree from time to time ……individual, I pity you.” Monkey pity yourself, now you are turning tables to show what you aint?!!? You and your likes started all this racist comments and bad mouthing people thinking you are the crème de la crème and the ones that know it all from etiquette, driving on streets, standing in line, downgrading other nationalities etc... & I SAY IT ONCE AGAIN you’re an ill-bred peasant this is all who you are. You knock on doors expect answers. This goes as well to the friend of yours Palooza..last note big shaped and small minded brits & not sure what else is small do not get me upset but do give me pleasure kicking some sense in their minds. I bet you have trouble sleeping knowing that your in the closet self has been exposed. Go roll and binge & do some thinking of how to respect others to get the same in return. Take Palooza, errol & aaali with you…;o)

Palooza, ignore the troll if you do it will wither and die on the vine.....isnt it!

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 50 PM]

what a good idea Ancient, all your good for is being ignored. But its so much fun watching you getting all upset at us big bad Brits

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 47 PM]

Ancient X, most people on here disagree from time to time but in all of the years I have enjoyed 7 days I have never come across someone with as much anti west bile as you and ref my comments prior to this they are mainly aimed at you ever since you started referring to other human beings as scum. You are rude, crude and frankly not intelligent enough for sensible debate, you just lost that privilege, truly a sad individual, I pity you.

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 43 PM]

Palooza, then simply ignore reading my messages if your getting tired princess..

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 30 PM]

Ancient you may not have actually typed the words 'I dont like Brits' but it doesnt take much to read your postings on this article alone to realise that in fact you have a simmering hatred for Brits and Westerners in general. Take your neanderthal views elsewhere please we're tired of hearing them. Even Errol has come out of hiding to tell you to shut up

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 25 PM]

I think 7days has to close this brit debate or else it will spiral out of control.

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 12 : 10 PM]

Monkey, whether you are underclass or from the elite class you’re still a peasant with your obnoxious manners. If you are asking people not to generalize nor stereotype then why do you??? Browse through the previous 7days articles and read all your comments and ignorance to know where it stands. Let this be a lesson to you and your like. Stay here, crawl back or climb up the tree simply it is not my problem but yours but as a suggestion where ever you will be learn how to respect other human beings. I never said I do not like brits (prove that I said that) However even if I did it is none of anyone’s business to whom I do or not like. Why did I marry one? Take a good look at your hands and let me know if all your fingers are the same. Educate your self and enough with reflecting lack of knowledge to the people that you represent. Why are you on this pages anyways, shouldn’t you be in the zoo?

Posted by: anonymous [31.Aug.09 10 : 12 AM]

I suggest we let 'Modhesh' be the judge.

Posted by: anonymous [30.Aug.09 1 : 01 PM]

One more thing Dubai Guy, how many of these 'underclass' can actually afford to come here, I do not see any balance or validity in your remarks whatsoever, be specific in your comparison please the perhaps I can understand what you are saying, have you actually read this book?

Posted by: anonymous [30.Aug.09 12 : 06 PM]

Thanks Jock, so when is my money arriving in the big block of tar then? Stereotyping, me! ......never! Dubai-Guy, if you are suggesting that I am from the underclasses then you need to unwind your neck, I am just as angry at my fellow Brits behaviour as some people here. Please don't levy books at me ref this subject matter, I know all about the rise of the underclass, this is one reason I came here. You really need to see what my posts are trying to say here before you come to rather insulting conclusions, I am merely trying to state that not all Brits are like this however the less grey matter endowed here seem to never miss a chance to jump in and use this to vent their own usual anti British rubbish! Its just an opinion eh! so no hard feelings!

Posted by: anonymous [30.Aug.09 12 : 03 PM]

i wouldn't generalize but I think Mr. Monkey and Nemo should try reading Anthony Dalrymple's "LIFE AT THE BOTTOM" and be judge of their own actions. 'no hard feeling guys' its just a book.

Posted by: anonymous [29.Aug.09 10 : 13 AM]

Hey Monkey Allen! Are you sure you are British? Even here in Nigeria we know that the plural of "Saudi" is "Saudis".

Posted by: Jock [28.Aug.09 4 : 02 PM]

Oh dear oh dear, scratch the surface of this wonderful multi-cultural society and what do you find, a simmering pot of racism!!! It seems quite a lot of you should grow up!! British, dont drink alcohol, never been in trouble with police and neither has any member of my family, young, old past or present. Oh except for one, jailed for 3 months in Dubai for hiring an illegal, did he know he was illegal? NO, did it make a difference? NO. Did it ruin his life? YES. Was alcohol involved? NO. But he is one of the statistics mentioned. Think hard people before judging!!!!!

Posted by: anonymous [28.Aug.09 3 : 35 PM]

Monkeyallen - when u lot don't seem to hesitate to stereotype a race or nationality at first glance i just wanted to highlight it works both ways!!

Posted by: anonymous [28.Aug.09 10 : 01 AM]

PMM ref West Ham what is your point!!! I have never been to a football game and find these hooligans a terrible advert for my country! why do you think we are the same! why do you generalise! use your brain. Oh I see man an Indian guy married a dog the other day! so all Indians marry dog's do they! NO! GROW UP!

Posted by: anonymous [27.Aug.09 12 : 57 PM]

Stormy Storm good idea, perhaps we should do the same at British Airports ref visitors from here also! as from what I hear they are not all wine and roses!!! especially when it comes to manners!

Posted by: anonymous [27.Aug.09 12 : 54 PM]

Ancient X you truly make resentment an art form! Fill that chip on your shoulder in and just get on with it, we are here to stay as we are on the world stage,we have earnt that, if you do not like Brits as is clear to see then why did you marry one!, I personally like to get on with everyone despite their failings. Sorry but no amount of your rantings will change this. Live with it!

Posted by: anonymous [27.Aug.09 12 : 52 PM]

Talking about showing true colors - did anyone happen to see TV footage of the pathetic display of the hooligans at the West Ham vs Millwall match?

294 Brits arrested in 12 months, turn to the next page 130 illegals arrested in one day!! you dont need a calculator to work this one out!!

Posted by: el gringo [27.Aug.09 12 : 13 AM]

All airports should start screening people with British names or passports and ask them all sorts of questions, and teach them how to behave themselves in public.

Well, people here will not leave a chance to bad mouth Dubai. This report is not from Dubai authority, it is from British Foreign Office. To A A Ali, you really get excited when talking bad about Dubai. You claim you are here in Dubai for long time. I wonder why, if Dubai is as bad as u claim why dont u go back to where u come from. This report is from British Foreign Office about their own people, why are you getting excited about bad mouthing Dubai. You must be a really sad soul, who lives his most adult life in a country which you hate. What a loser.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 5 : 16 PM]

GTP I think you hit the nail home regarding bad press in UK. But in all fairness the UK press had only exposes the fallacy of this so claimed utopia according to their own publicity machine re the perfect, the best, the biggest, the tallest etc. and MonkeyAllen I too am confused about the alcohol law - why sell it and then it is illegal to consume it. Then we have the dont drink and drive but you use the taxi and the driver takes you to the police station where they give you compulsory lodging for the night. Baffling right.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 4 : 43 PM]

In I also recall reading a study a while ago that Europeans in general are the most law abiding residents of all in UAE.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 3 : 58 PM]

It seems like everyone here has misunderstood the article, even those who are english. The article mentions numbers from the British Foreign office showing that UAE is the country where brits are most arrested, there are no evidence that brits are arrested more then other nationalities.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 3 : 44 PM]

The Last statistics that I read concerning the population of British ex-pats in the UAE was in the range of 120.000 so 294 out of 120.000, results in a very small percentage of people arrested. Pinoy Henyo if the CROWN fits why not wear it, envy will get you nowhere in life. Ancient x how can we make people look like barbarians if the shoe fits well…enough said! Tweety any country in the world should be very concerned about allowing South Africans to visit when you look at the crime stats from your country... 150 rapes a day and these are only the ones that have been reported to the police as most victims do not bother reporting crimes as the police are incompetent or are just apathetic to the victims.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 3 : 42 PM]

Thanks Veritas! and we all know who that is! x marks the spot!!!!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 3 : 16 PM]

If you dont want alcohol here then ban it! In between times stop moaning about it! and have enough intelligence to understand that not ALL Brits are drunks! & look at the over all crime statistics here! I bet Brits hardly register!!!! Also remember how many of us 'DRUNK' Brits are here with the expertise you DONT have helping put the city up.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 3 : 08 PM]

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 2 : 58 PM]

My My! Has this article been published in retaliation of all the bad press Dubai has been getting in the UK recently - case of Pot calling Kettle maybe? I have lived happily in Dubai for the past 3 years and as long as you respect the Country and its culture you shouldnt come to any harm.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 2 : 09 PM]

Longterm Inmate: I feel bad for you trying to justify...not worth it mate..their ...... reputation is there whether any of you like it or not. Better advice is to head to your embassy and work out a new order for the exporting to the UAE. 007 is hollywood made, the above mentioned are british made ;o)

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 2 : 04 PM]

I think the British should not be stereotyped just because a number of them have been wrong. But again this is the media, all arabs and muslims are stereotyped as terrorist now all the British will be stereotyped as drunkards and vulgar. The media today tries hard to create sectors between humans and races. And honestly they are doing a good job!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 1 : 56 PM]

Firstly - the report says most likely to be arrested in UAE which means other countries have given up giving them free accomodation and free meals in jails cause it almost bankrupt them. Saying that I have met many decent Brits too but it seems that the media would like to highlight on the behaviour of the few bad or rotten apples for sensationalisms sake. But statistically are they the highest numbers of arrest in UAE as far as natioalities go? - I dont think so but maybe 7 Days could find out for us.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 1 : 53 PM]

One of the things that isn't mentioned here is that the majority of Britons arrested are transit passengers who tend to be caught out by the UAE's surprising drugs laws. You can be jailed here for carrying anti-depressants or even painkillers that in the UK are freely available over the counter. But hey, since everyone here seems quite happy to say that because a few examples of one group are bad means EVERYONE in the group is, can we know safely accept the whole SRK/Muslim thing as being perfectly acceptable?

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 1 : 53 PM]

And the best part is - this study was not done by any independent source. This was the British Foregin Office - so anyone should take it up with them.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 1 : 42 PM]

I am English and I can tell you that there are a lot of white-trash coming from my country to the UAE. Accordingly we end up with the behaviour described on these pages. From my experience of dealing with such people in a business environment, they are clearly under-qualified to do their job. But lets not judge all English the same, the majority are many kind, honest, respectful, professional and law abiding people who add value to the UAE economy and society.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 1 : 31 PM]

@MonkeyAllen, go to Spain, go to Thailand, go to places in the Caribbean... It's always the British who are the loudest, the most drunk and most fighting. It's not just in Dubai. And the problem is definately alcohol im masses. They don't know, when it's enough.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 12 : 18 PM]

From what I've seen Saudi's can handle their booze..Brits can't..They binge from here, blossom up from there & become clowns everywhere...Lets stick to this topic now setting aside any deviation from the subject, after all brits are good at doing that!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 12 : 12 PM]

The sad part is that Britons dont need a visa to enter the UAE - they are issued one by default on arrival - We South Africans - who behave ourselves most of the time - have to apply for visas and face heavy questioning when we come into the UAE - doesnt make sense..

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 12 : 11 PM]

Anxious X - you nailed it, i couldn't have said it better!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 12 : 09 PM]

While there are many civilised, decent British people around here unfortunately for them they are outnumbered by the so called 'chavs' from UK. Cheap, thrashy, easy, drunks displaying their shameful behaviour wherever they go. If only Dubai Immigration would find a way to sort out this trash (which honestly would not be very hard to tell going by their overtly crude behaviour wherever they go) and stop them from entering this country!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 11 : 45 AM]

Jebel Ali! I am a Briton and hardly touch the stuff!! Not one of your better posts. As far as handling it is concerned, lets talk about the Saudi's and booze!!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 11 : 38 AM]

I think we better stop criticizing the Britons for their wrong doings. Honestly speaking for sure Britons are not the most likely to be arrested in the UAE, its just that when Bristish people are the one who do it, they are making a big story out of it.What about those nationalities who used to smuggle drugs inside the country?, What about those nationalities who used to be involved in Sexual Harassment?, What about those nationalities who used to run over to people on the road? What about those nationalities who used to rob houses? Do not criticize as " NOBODY IS PERFECT" in this world!!!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 11 : 04 AM]

Everyone reading this should take the term British as English

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 11 : 03 AM]

At the end of the day it's all because of the alcohol. Britons definitely drink too much and cannot handle alcohol. All descibed cases were committed under the influence of booze.

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 10 : 11 AM]

Tehee hee hee!!! *chuckles*!

Posted by: anonymous [26.Aug.09 10 : 05 AM]

Firstly let's see some front page stats on other nationalities in this kind of way next! say for eg 'Indian drivers the worst' etc etc !!. No nationality is perfect however for you to emblazen your message in such a way is just unfair!. Lets talk about the 'visitors' to the UK that bring vice- drugs - people trafficking - violent crime - gun running!now thats serious crime!. It would seem to me that most Brits here caught out are either newbies or tourists, SO more should be done to inform them of restrictions, but hey! maybe no one does, why? because its all about packing them in to hotels and getting the money!. MAKE PEOPLE MORE AWARE AND I ASSURE YOU THEY WILL COME AND BE MORE CAREFUL, OR PERHAPS THEY WONT! COME AT ALL!
