Rushing around town the last couple of weeks, it’s been hard to miss the flags adorning every single possible pole, car, and even person - I spotted a lady wearing an abaya made in material the colours of the UAE flag - fantastic!
I think it’s great that a country’s people should be so patriotic - whatever is going on in the world and even within their nation, the people of the UAE retain pride in and show love for their country.
Honestly - I think it would be good if more nations were like this.
I certainly think my own - the UK - could do with a good dose of national pride.
Flying flags and shouting about it there is almost frowned upon - do most English, for example, even know when our ‘national day’ (St George’s Day) is?!
Ok, the UAE might not have as much to shout about this year as others but does that mean that its people shouldn’t still embrace their special day and show their happiness to be part of their nation.
Bravo Emiratis - enjoy your day!

Posted by: william [30.Dec.09 11 : 40 PM]I agree with Sue - It was great to see people of all nationalities celebrating national day. The problem with England isn't about do-gooders or immigration (interesting to see an emmigrant complaining about immigration!). The problem with patriotism in England is that the St Georges flag has been "stolen" by racists and xenophobes. You are now more likely to see the st georges cross tattooed on the forehead of some nazi skinhead than on the t-shirt of a toddler (as with the UAE flag on national day) Unless the trend can be reversed and the st georges flag become a symbol of unity and positivity amongst all races in England you won't see the kind of celebrations seen over the UAE this week
Posted by: Casserole [03.Dec.09 4 : 21 PM]I still dont get this rubbish as to why the English cannot celebrate their traditions in their own country. If people dont like these tradition they should move back home. After all why did they come there to get away from suffocating regimes in their country and now they are imposing same on other nations. Next election VOTE Tory - in hope they will give UK back to the English people - cause I liked UK the way it was and not how it is today.
Posted by: anonymous [03.Dec.09 3 : 12 PM]tonyb1: Your assertions are incorrect. There are no rules or laws in UK that state that flags or banners are not allowed to be hung from cars or houses. Many people enjoy celebrating St George's day in England with Morris dancing, English ale, and the waving of English flags. I know I do!
Posted by: pjenkins [03.Dec.09 2 : 14 PM]I think Sue! many English, thats ENGLISH know when St Georges day is and celebrate it, I most certainly do, by the way St George was NOT english so why celebrate it! dont know :) How about we celebrate Winston Churchill day Boudicea Day Sir Frank Whittle day, Sir Christopher Wren Day and so on! all of whom made incredible contributions to our country. You cannot compare the UK with the UAE sorry but you cannot. Many traditional values of our own people have been stiffled by a load of politically correct fools. Labour will soon be out and a new dawn of government in! Under present immigration my country will be swollen to over 80 million in not so many years, I for one know this has to stop immediately, enough is enough! Hopefully the tories will stem the flow or better still STOP IT! The UK has suffered under this influx as we are having to bend to 'guests' traditions in fabour of not offending them! Sorry but last time I looked their traditions/religions are not primarily that of the host! therefore if they dont like it! LEAVE! To conclude the Emirates rightfully! celebrate and good for them! If we did this in the UK we would be branded nationalists!!! how ridiculous is that!
Posted by: anonymous [03.Dec.09 11 : 00 AM]England's National Day is the 23rd of April - and I couldn't be any more proud about my country. Fact is that back home they have got so politically correct that St Georges Day is looked upon by the "do-gooders" as an insult to all the other races, nationalities and religions in the country and a lot of people are bullied into being embarassed about it. So go ahead and celebrate St Georges Day back home - but someone somewhere is going to winge about it. Proud but restricted Dubai
Posted by: anonymous [03.Dec.09 9 : 08 AM]Sue get real. The rules in the UK are, that we cant hang flags and banners from our houses or cars in case we offend someone. We have to abide by rules from other countries. You try plastering your car with the ST Georges cross and drive around in Dubai on ST Georges day and see what happens, you will probably get arrested. Drive around london on any countries national day with your car covered with their flags and it is fine. So dont come along with all that rubbish about being patriotic. If you were that patriotic you would still be in the UK.
